Valera Ryzhenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1964. He laid the foundations for his pipe-making career by building musical instruments and even a wooden bicycle alongside his grandfather, a master cabinet maker. In 1994, Valera began smoking and repairing his own pipes. He later taught himself how to make pipes and made his first attempt with briar in 2003. Through the Kiev Pipe Club, he received suggestions and criticism from other members that contributed to his personal development. He later met with world-renowned pipe makers such as Bill Ashton, Luigi Viprati, Former, and Tom Eltang for guidance. Ryzhenko uses only Italian briar, Japanese, and German ebonite in his pipes.
